Eighty Years War / Dutch Revolt (1568 - 1648)
“The King of Spain hat now got a command so wide,
that out of his
Dominions the Sunne can neither rise nor set.”
Feltam (1652, p. 85) cited in Parker (1977, p. 16)
In the middle years of the 16th Century the Spanish Netherlands were wracked by secular and religious decent. The first open violence was the iconoclasm of 1566, however the convention is to give the date of 1568 as the beginning of the war, as this was the first year where armies fought open battles.
